When Steel Meets Science: Bridging GeoStructural Engineering and Microbiology for Asset Life Extension

1st June 2026

We were thrilled to recently welcome Dr Adrian Crew and Dr Sotirios Oikonomou from University of the West of England-UWE to our Bristol office, marking the official kick-off of an exciting, long-term partnership between Aeolia Offshore Engineering and leading academic minds in microbiology.

Our collaborative mission is high-stakes: fundamentally rewriting how the offshore wind industry addresses Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC) in turbine foundations, both at the early blueprint stage and throughout decades of harsh offshore operations.

  • The Reality Check: Traditional engineering excels at structural calculations and soil mechanics but often treats the ocean as a sterile environment. Biology doesn't follow static design codes. Nature is adaptive, resilient, and constantly changing over a foundation's 40-year lifespan.

  • Turning Nature into an Ally: By bridging our geostructural expertise with UWE’s advanced microbiology, we are integrating biological realities directly into the design stage. We are learning how biofilms behave so we can anticipate them, rather than blindly fighting them.

  • The Commercial Impact: Unchecked bacterial pitting causes premature fatigue failure, risking billions in ungenerated revenue. Our collaboration focuses squarely on asset life extension and safeguarding projects against premature decommissioning.

Smarter engineering starts at the microscopic level. Together, Aeolia Offshore Engineering and UWE Bristol are fully ready to support developers to achieve and exceed their structural, operational, and commercial goals. Watch this space as our partnership develops.

The Decommissioning Blind Spot: Is Your FEED Future-Proof?

29th April 2026

As of today, approximately 250 offshore wind turbines (WTGs) have been decommissioned globally. While this marks a successful first era of removal, it represents less than 1% of the wave coming by 2030.

Currently, the industry is in a race to order steel and meet fabrication deadlines for new builds. In this rush, the "End-of-Life" strategy is often relegated to a footnote in the FEED stage. Prioritising tomorrow’s delivery at the expense of a 40-year decommissioning plan creates a massive hidden liability for investors.

Nature Does Not Forgive. Unexpected seabed lowering can shift natural frequencies, dynamically exciting structures and accelerating fatigue damage beyond design limits. If a single WTG faces a critical structural failure while the rest of the park is live, are you prepared for a selective exit?

At Aeolia Offshore Engineering, we address the questions the industry ignores:

  • Selective Exit: Do you have the procedures to decommission specific assets without compromising the live inter-array cable string?

  • Dynamic Reality: Has your design accounted for seabed shifts that could force an urgent, unplanned removal?

  • Consent Readiness: Are your H&E and O&M files robust enough to handle unexpected offshore operations mid-lifecycle?

Don't let your exit strategy be an afterthought. We integrate "Decommissioning Intelligence" into the earliest design briefs, ensuring your foundation concepts are prepared for both the planned end-of-life and the unexpected "early exit."

Climate Breakdown by Doug Allan (OBE)

22nd November 2025

We were thrilled last Saturday 22 November 2025 to meet and watch Doug Allan's (OBE) presentation about his experience capturing stunning photos and video of wildlife and the challenges and sacrifices he and his crew had to deal with for us to be able to see those remarkable creatures and places. The photo displayed below is Doug having a one on one portrait with a 40 ton mother Humpback whale when she positioned vertically with her nose out of the water to have a good look at Doug with his camera underwater. Fascinating images and stories that made all the audience speechless.

Doug at the end of his presentation referred to climate change and actually his words were "Climate Breakdown" because he has seen animals suffering from the melting and breaking ice, like polar bears and penguins, and of course, traveling the world has seen deprived conditions experienced by humans.

Doug's firsthand experience confirms the terrifying numbers: our planet has already warmed by more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Based on his feedback and other scientific sources, with daily emissions hitting an alarming 100 million tons, we are speeding toward breaching the 2+ degrees Celsius. mark between the 2040s and 2070s.

Great feedback from such a giant of experience in his field, who mentioned Offshore Wind Energy to be an essential move in the right direction, but stressed that we need to do more because the studies are not positive.

At Aeolia Offshore Engineering, we are committed to supporting this vital sector by optimising the foundations and driving down the Levelized Cost of Energy. Our mandate is to execute simultaneous technical and financial optimisation to ensure every turbine placement decision maximises Annual Energy Production, while minimising Capital Expenditure and Operational Expenditure.

A big thanks to The Hellenic Centre of Bristol for hosting the event and, of course, Doug for his outstanding presentation.
